Né en 1912 à Margate en Angleterre, Alfred Deller enregistre pour harmonia mundi dès 1967 et jusqu'à sa mort survenue en juillet 1979. Devenus des best-sellers (Music for a While, O Solitude...), ces enregistrements ont enthousiasmé le public et marqué plusieurs générations de musiciens. "Nous n'avions alors jamais entendu d'alto masculin, et d'emblée à ce niveau ! Un timbre de voix magnifique, des modulations raffinées - obtenues sans effort -, idéales pour nos instruments anciens ; une voix parfaitement maîtrisée qui s'imposait avec la plus grande expressivité. L'accompagner fut un plaisir sans mélange."
