Excerpt:

The “last songs”.
The songs of Richard Strauss belong to the Romantic tradition begun by Schubert and Schumann, and form a wonderful conclusion to it, like a sunset glow. ''Out of the musical ideas, which – God knows how – have been readying themselves within me (and once, as it were, the receptacle is full to the brim), a song can appear in the twinkling of an eye, as soon as I run into a poem in an anthology that even approximately corresponds to what I have in my mind''>/I>, Strauss confessed; and it is indeed a mark of his genius that he could express in his music the quintessence of the 205 poems he set all through his creative life. Here is a magnificent anthology of them.
