At the very heart of a musical golden age that extends from Willaert to Vivaldi by way of Gabrieli and Monteverdi, St Mark’s encapsulates all on its own the glorious past of Venice. A true temple of music, the basilica still resounds with the grave outpourings of that sacred repertory. Its directors of music disdained neither virtuosity nor a splendour that took full advantage of the possibilities of spatialisation offered by the grandiose architecture. Echoing a sumptuous heritage, this programme brings back to life the rich musical moments of the incomparable monument.
