There is a difference of twenty years between the two quartets by Debussy (1893) and Zemlinsky (1913) on this disk. This difference should be reinforced by the antagonism between the French and the Viennese styles of the period; however, there are several similarities between these major works of chamber music, above all, a very personal working of the leitmotiv. The two different perspectives of cyclic composition give greater unity to the pieces, and in both cases, cause admiration.
