The virtuosic cello under the Second Empire
An extraordinary solo performer and an intimate friend of Chopin, Auguste Franchomme taught the violoncello at the Paris Conservatoire for almost forty years (1846-84). Far from contening himself with his teaching activities alone, he untiringly devoted himself to composition as well. Apart from the Etudes and the Caprices, designed primarily for teaching purposes, but also of considerable artistic richness, his output comprised several works of the first rank. The splendid Variations and Fantaisies are eloquent testimonies to his creative talent.
This title was released for the first time in 1996.
