Sophie Karthäuser

Biography

Sophie Karthäuser completed her studies with Noelle Barker at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
She has appeared with The Academy of Ancient Music, Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Les Talens Lyriques, Akademie für alte Musik Berlin, the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and the Monteverdi Choir, under such conductors as Louis Langrée, Kent Nagano, William Christie, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Christian Zacharias, Thomas Hengelbrock, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jérémie Rhorer, Kurt Masur, John Eliot Gardiner, and Riccardo Chailly.
Since winning the Audience Prize at the Wigmore Hall song contest in 2003, she has appeared in recital at the Palais des Beaux-Arts and La Monnaie in Brussels, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the opera houses of Paris, Lille, Nantes, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, and Frankfurt.
Sophie Karthäuser’s many Mozart roles include Pamina, Despina and Zerlina at La Monnaie, Susanna at the Opéra de Lyon, Tamiri at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Sandrina at the Theater an der Wien, and Ilia at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, La Monnaie, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Future projects include Polissena (Radamisto) at the Theater an der Wien under René Jacobs, Angelica (Orlando) at La Monnaie, and Créuse in Charpentier’s Médée at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Opéra de Lille.
Among her recordings are the role of Sandrina in La finta giardiniera (René Jacobs), Mozart’s complete songs and a recital of Mozart arias, a solo album of Grétry arias, a CD of French Verlaine settings, and Handel’sFaramondo and Susanna (title role, with William Christie).
